All Saints Year 9 Knowsley Cup Winners |
On Wednesday 24th April the Year 9 Boys football team played Halewood in the Knowsley Cup Final. The Saints deservedly reclaimed their trophy with a convincing 6 - 3 victory. The game started at a frenetic pace and it was Halewood who took the game to the Saints. G.Prescott in the All Saints goal had to deal with some shots from range that he did well to stop. It didn't take long for the tide to change in the Saints favour. And when the boys got themselves in front they didn't rest on their laurels as they charged into a 5-0 half time lead.
The forward players of D.Daniels, J.Swan, and E.Tomney were in scintillating form. D.Daniels started the scoring with a sublime volley over the despairing Halewood keeper. The technique of the strike was first class, one that a certain Robin Van Persie would be proud of.
D.Daniels didn't have to wait long before his next strike, this time it was a lot easier with a tap in from 6 yards. J.Swan drilled a clinical finish with his left foot into Halweood keepers bottom left hand post to make it 3-0. This gave the Saints clear daylight. The Saints however continued to push for more goals. S.Williams goal to make it 4-0 was the best of them all. It involved no fewer that 5 All Saints players pushing the ball around the pitch. A fabulous ball over the Halewood defence sent S.Williams clear and he struck a sweet half volley past the keeper. E.Tomney showed terrific desire to make it 5-0 just before half time as he beat the keeper in a one on one situation to stroke the ball in to the roof of the net.
The lads at half time were told about the importance of remaining focused. Three changes were made, on came O.Healy, J.McNabb, and J.Duke. Halewood came out of the blocks early and gave themselves a chance by scoring very early on. The Saints still looked dangerous going forward and E.Tomney showed flashes of tremendous skill to constantly trouble the Halewood defence. Halewood got the score back to 5-2, but any hopes were dashed when J.Duke latched on to a fierce in-swinging L.Thomas corner to prod the ball home. A late consolation strike added some respectability to the scoreline but the result was a convincing one for All Saints. There was some fantastic performances. Man of the match goes to S.Williams his raw pace and strength continuously troubled Halewood. His work ethics was outstanding and he regained possession on numerous occasions. There was a real disciplined display up front from J.Swan, he showed he has good awareness and vision to unselfishly pick out teammates. S.Fagan at centre half was excellent in reading the danger and playing clever balls into the likes of E.Tomney who bossed the midfield. L.Thomas collected the trophy for the third year in succession. If this team sticks together and continue to develop then there is no reason why they can't make a serious assault on the Merseyside Cup in Year 10.
Captain Liam Thomas holds the Knowsley Cup. The third year in succession for captain fantastic. |
