| Members of All Saints PE Media Team interviewing Cardiff City's Wing Wizard Craig Noone
On Monday 25th March Cardiff City winger and past All Saints pupil Craig Noone came into school to tell answer some questions from the PE media team. Asking the question were Year 12 student Connor Bennett and Year 8 pupil Jake Cowin. Both boys are looking at careers in journalism, and the lads had their first taste of interviewing a player on the cusp of joining the premier league with Welsh team Cardiff City.
Craig Noone is 25 years old and plays for Cardiff City in the NPower Championship. He is also a past pupil of All Saints.
1. Who is the best player you have played with ? Best player you’ve played against ?
The best player I have played with is Craig Bellamy at Cardiff. Best player I have played against is Steven Gerrard when I was at Brighton. Both are brilliant players.
2. Inspirations and Motivation for taking up Football? Any particular role models that have inspired you?
Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard are my inspirations and role models because I would watch them as I grew up and I wanted to be like them.
3. What are your goals ?
My main goal is to play Premier League football regularly and play to the best of my ability. Being with Cardiff I have the chance to do both.
4.How is your training structured? What does a typical week look like for you?
Monday is training from 9:15 then in to the gym until 10. We then train until 12:30, finish, shower and lunch until 1. Tuesday is the same again. Wednesday is a rest day for the lads. Thursday is the same as the beginning of the week with training and Friday is match preparation for the Saturday.
5. What does a diet consist of in preparation for a game?
About 3 and a half hours before a game I will eat Chicken and pasta and vegetables for the energy needed for the game. Some lads have different routines and will eat beans on toast or poached eggs.
6. What do you like to read? What is your favourite book?
I really like autobiographies and I have just finished Fabrice Muamba’s ‘I’m Still Standing’ and I really enjoyed reading that. I have read others like Steven Gerrard’s and Robbie Fowler’s and I thought them really insightful.
7. Favourite Music genre and favourite artist?
I’m into all sorts of music and bands. Currently I'm into Mumford and Sons and think their album is really good.
8. What is your proudest moment to date?
My proudest moments to date was getting promotion from League 1with Brighton to the Championship. Also, playing against Liverpool at Anfield was really special as I grew up going to watch the game there and I was actually playing there.
9. What does coming from Kirkby mean to you and what is good about it ?
Coming from Kirkby is special to me as my family and friends are from here. I grew up and went to school here and school was great. Whenever I get a chance I'm up here seeing everyone.
10. What is your favourite piece of Sports memorabilia ?
I have Steven Gerrard’s shirt from after the cup game at the Amex for Brighton and that was pretty special. I also have Jamie Carragher’s and Ashley Cole’s.
11. What is your favourite ever Football boots?
The first original pair of Adidas Predators, there was a big craze around about them when they were released and I wore them from when I was 16 till I was 22. I’ve only just moved to Adidas F50’s and they now sponsor me with boots and equipment.
12. What does it take to make it as a top professional football player ?
It takes dedication, commitment, hard work and perseverance. In my year at school there were a couple of lads better than me but they gave it up and I stuck at it and now I'm playing in the Championship, a few points off promotion to the Premier League. If you stick at it you will succeed and that’s what I did.

Sartorius Strikes to Silence SFX

All Saints faced a team high on confidence in SFX who are perched at the top of the Merseyside schools and college league. It was going to be a massive test for the Saints after a gut wrenching defeat on Monday in the Merseyside Shield. This was a fixture that could make or disintegrate a season. The All Saints boys would need to show plenty of resilience and character to raise their game for such a tough opposition.
From the early exchanges All Saints showed no hangover from Monday's result, and were unlucky on 15 minutes when Sean Sartorius fed Daniel Quick who shot powerfully first time, only to see the keeper save smartly. The pitch at SFX is perfect for playing expansive football. The pitch is wide and the sun was shinning, which meant both teams were able to play their passing game. At times All Saints players were looking for the Hollywood ball, and gave possession away cheaply. Too many players were guilty of not driving the team forward with the ball.
All Saints were undone on 30 minutes on the edge of their own 18 yard box. Smart interplay by the SFX forwards unlocked a static defence to put the hosts 1 - 0 up. The All Saints boys could have let their heads go down, but they rallied and should have levelled through Adam Campbell who blazed over when through on the keeper. The half time team talk was very positive after such a spirited display.
After instructions to carry the ball, by dribbling into dangerous areas and to find feet, the All Saints boys started to cause the hosts some problems. Sean Sartorius carried the ball through the centre of the pitch before he was fouled 25 yards from goal. Free kick specialist John Hughes stood over the ball. He had a well set wall in his path, but Hughes struck a thunderous effort with his left foot past the despairing keeper.
It was the least the Saints deserved. On the right side of Midfield the impressive Bradley O'Connor was giving plenty of ball to Connor Smith. Most of Saints good play came down the right side.
With 9 minutes remaining it looked as if SFX had won the points when a deep corner was met at the back post by the SFX centre back to send the ball across the 6 yard box for a simple SFX tap in. Again such a late goal could have seen heads go down and the boys feel sorry for themselves. However as soon as the restart took place the All Saints boys pushed for the equaliser. They were rewarded with five minutes to go when Adam Campbell's good work resulted in a corner. John Hughes sent in a skimming corner. Jack Hinnigan rose highest and sent the ball arrowing towards the Head of Sean Sartorius who nodded home. It was the least the team deserved. Both sides pushed for the winner, but a share of the spoils was a fair result all around. It was a good point for the Saints after Monday's shock result.
There were plenty of good performances. Declan Glover was solid in the centre of defence and his pace nullified the SFX forwards. Paul Carney's handling and kicking were outstanding. But Man of the match and looking at home at right back was Bradley O'Connor. His defensive awareness and pass completion rate was excellent throughout.
A fine return to form. This must continue if the Saints are to reach the play off positions

Yr 7 Knowsley Boys & Girls Cross Country Champions
On a bright but freezing King George V playing fields in Huyton, All Saints claimed The coveted Year 7 Boys and Girls cross country championship prizes. The girls team were very strong and boasted 15 members. Star of the meet was Georgia Marlow who obliterated the field with sensible pace setting and then turned on the after burners to power her way to victory. Nicola Stuart wasn't too far away in 4th position. This latest success for the Year 7 girls, means that All Saints girls are the force to be reckoned with when it comes to school sport.
The Year 7 lads team were all close to each other in their final standing places. Best placed was John Swift who finished in 3rd place. Jordan Short was superb throughout. He gave every once of energy he had to gain himself a top 6 finish. The boys have also had a successful start to their sporting life at All Saints and look capable of adding more silverware as the year develops. All the other year groups who took part were a credit to the school. Leon Lewis won the Yr 8 & 9 event. He timed his finish to perfection and comfortably claimed first prize. Year 10 pupil Steven Franklin should also feel very proud of a second place finish in the Yr 10 & 11 competition. He was beaten by a Year 11 pupil who raced for England. Steven will be a huge favourite for the top honour next year.

First X1 suffer Merseyside Shield Upset
All Saints X1st Eleven suffered a huge upset when they lost 4-2 to De La Salle (Croxteth). Poor defending in 19 calamitous second half minutes meant the Saints had too much to do to get level. The lads did rally, and brought it back to 2-3, however as they pushed for the equaliser they were punished on the counter attack. The season promised so much but a lack of squad depth has meant that there are too many round pegs in square holes. Getting into the play off positions will be the teams main goal now and aiming to win the title.
